Reforms, 2010-12
Reforms deals with physical, cultural and political implications involved in the Hypothetical transformation of a former house into an independent art space, and the potential change of an institutional art venue like Museum of Modern art of Medellin (MAMM) into a domestic space. The installation featured a wooden door and a wardrobe that replicates the same items of a former house from a traditional neighborhood in Medellin converted into an independent art space known as "Casa Tres Patios". These architectural components were transferred to one of the exhibition spaces of MAMM seemingly as a physical reform, so that the museum became the independent art space for a while. A blueprint of the space featuring the intervention plan was also on view. The doors, shaped with the curved volume as featured in the convention of architectural drawing, produce oddity and deny their functionality. In this way, along with questioning the conventions in architecture, the work raises commentaries on the current relations between institutionalism and the independent art spaces in the present art world. |
