Inflationary space, 2017 |
The title Inflationary space alludes to the scientific theory of Inflationary universe that brings up an explanation on the universe expansion. The project explores the elusive spatial phenomenon by using scientific methods like mathematics and architecture planning into The series which integrate the work emerge from applying calculation, arithmetic sequences and logarithms to drawing as an extended practice. By using sheets of glass fiber mesh (mosquito nets) as support-surface, the work consists in making tiny cut outs on the fabric, following mathematical operations. In this way, the grid gradually increases the void spaces. This is about a meticulous process which produces ambiguous images as a result (between abstract and figurative), and which, despite of being formed of orthogonal lines, create curved patterns and shapes. Wavy panels is an installation conceived for the stained glass window which dominates the space of Lokkus gallery in Medellin. It bears reference to La Tourette Monastery stained glass window by Le Corbusier in Lyon (France). The intervention draws attention on this particular element in modern architecture along with arithmetic sequences, in particular Fibonacci sequence, studied by the architect in his famous “Modulor” book, and applied in this detail of La Tourette building. The installation exposes a number of mosquito net layers put one on top of the other to create different shades of gray, spanning the whole stained glass window inside the gallery. A backlit illumination allows the installation to yield a visual wavy effect due to the Moiré effect. |
